Yesterday, a group of us found ourselves with a free afternoon on our hands. So we decided to mosey on down to the National Portrait Gallery. I have actually never been there, mostly due to the fact that someone (cough cough my family) tends to put an "art museum restriction" on me whenever we travel. I can't remember exactly how many per day/city I'm allowed to drag them to see, but it's never enough in my mind. Apparently, not everybody loves to spend back-to-back full days gazing at rows of magnificent works of art. Whatever.
The National Portrait Gallery did not disappoint, either. We started with a photograph collection by Paul McCartney's daughter, and moved onto paintings of the Tudors, Stuarts, and Victorians. The museum did a good job laying out the historical backdrop of each time period. My attention was most grabbed by Queen Anne, who lived during the Glorious Revolution and was happily married to Prince George of Denmark. She was pregnant eighteen times, but never had a child live into adulthood. I think that whenever life starts to give me lemons, I'll start to think about what it was like to live through that... and be grateful for what I have.
