Things I Learned on my Mini Break in Portugal: 5. On the Christmas off-season, you can find Santa's helpers in Lisbon.

While in Lisbon, we checked out a fado restaurant since my guidebook said that it was a must-do for all visitors. What is fado? It is kind of like poetry and song and an opera all in one. A story is told, and while I did not completely understand the entire ditty, I did learn one thing:

Clearly, Santa's elves go on holiday in Portugal. (Photo credits to Chiquita, who originally entitled this "Portugal v. the North Pole")

Of course, we got pulled up on stage at the end. And then this Portuguese woman kept taking pictures of me. She was sitting at the table beside us, and after I rejoined my party, showed me the slideshow of me she had on her camera. It was a strange night.
