As I sit here, in my pajamas after a wonderful romp around downtown Raleigh last night, I have made a decision: I am going to blog about my year in England. I'm not sure what "blogging" really is, how to do it, or whether I want so much of my life recorded on the internet. But I can learn and adapt.
Oh, and if we haven't talked for a while: I'm about to leave for a year in London, where I'll be getting my LL.M. in International Business Law from UCL (University College London). I have signed on for another year of being a poor student while dreaming of the day that I have a real, paying job. It is kind of sad, but I am actually looking forward to library study groups, classes on international topics, and unhealthy levels of coffee. And obviously: The Accents. I get the chills just thinking about all of those glorious dialects in one city.
I'm hoping that this will enable my friends and family to feel more connected, and generally to keep up with what's going on overseas. (And mom, just fyi: if I'm blogging, I'm alive.)** I hope that in turn, y'all will send me updates on your lives whenever you get a chance, so that when we once again have face time it won't take 24 hours to catch up! We can just discuss the "too juicy for the internet" portions. Also, I love reading my friends' travel blogs, so I hope my writing and/or storytelling won't be too horrific to follow. And perhaps it will inspire a couple of you to journey over to visit! I adore visitors.
I plan on giving general updates and keeping the blog as nonpolitical as possible. However, I was recently informed that I am moving to a country where I have to purchase a tv license ("licence") to watch my. own. tv. Or shows online. So I'll do my best.
I remember Staci summarizing our first few months in France very well: "It's like it's Dumb and Dumber do France... every single day." I have no doubt I will be as gauche in a land where I (supposedly) speak the language.
If anyone has tips or advice, I am a blogging novice so they would be very much appreciated (cough cough LAPH if you're reading this). I'm off to investigate how to fit an entire life into a suitcase and to come up with a new comeback other than "And you call yourself American?!" Ciao friends!
** Inversely, this does not follow that if I have not posted a blog in a while, I am dead.
Mackie, you're going to have the best time! I'm so jealous! And maybe I'll visit if I can get up enough $ for airfare- those accents give me chills too:)
ReplyDeleteGood luck and we'll all miss you!!!
I am so excited about this blog! I can't wait to read every dirty detail of your life, every single day. :)
