Last night, I went out to grab some pre-term drinks with my fellow law students. This group seems to encompass the good ol' motto of "work hard, play hard" that I attempt to integrate into all of my scholastic pursuits. While I was there, I met not one, but two people from Cyprus (known as Cypriots).
We played the "guess where I'm from" game, and Cypriot seemed thrilled that I 1) guessed correctly, 2) knew that Cyprus existed, and 3) am AMERICAN (Apparently I got extra points for that. I pretended not to be offended that I was expected to know less because of my nationality). From what he told me, very few Americans know where Cyprus is-- so for everybody out there that one day might meet a Cypriot, here ya go! Cyprus is a cute little island tucked up near Turkey. Cypriot told me that it is very similar to Crete (trip, anybody?!). However, I quickly lost my "Geography Goddess" status when it came to light that I had no clue what language they spoke there (Greek, as it turns out). I have this vague feeling that wikipedia is going to be my best friend this year.
The Cypriot turned out to have quite a take on the south, wanting to know all about SUV's, Republicans, and South Carolina. Not North Carolina, but South Carolina. He said that he liked it better (although he has never been to the USA and wasn't really sure why).
I'm going to take and post pictures soon! Much love to everybody back home.
